My work reflects on matters of identity, survival, absurdity. Aspects of life in an everyday diaspora. In my paintings the accumulation of human debris suggests a world where the life of the object stands in for the presence of the figure and biological activity. Human striving and tinkering are strewn over earth, water and sky. I have drawn from the everchanging landscape of popular culture and the constant retellings and retoolings of myth that describe a common journey – everything depicted in my work has probably happened or probably will happen.
In these paintings landscape is a jumping off point for narrative, it is an imaginary ground in which I can locate social, art historical and psychological interests. My work flirts with disaster, and sometimes disaster flirts back.
Drawing from the idea of the Wunderkammer, I have collected in these images articles of wonder – items of survival, debris of existence, evidence of journeys and struggle -Jewels and shells and rarities of wealth, nuts and bolts, animal traps, old parts and food, lost elements of shelter, rations.
